Improve Your Google Visibility Score
Your visibility score is the share of searches where customers actually see you — organic results, the local pack, featured snippets, and now AI Overviews. Here is how to measure it and the levers that move it.
What Is a Google Visibility Score?
A Google visibility score (sometimes called a visibility index) estimates how often searchers actually see your site: the percentage of impressions you capture across the keywords that matter to your business, weighted by ranking position. Rank #1 on a high-volume term and you earn most of its visibility; rank #40 and you effectively earn none — which is why two sites with the same number of keywords can have wildly different scores.
There is no single official score from Google. SEO platforms each compute their own version from position data, and in 2026 the serious ones also count new surfaces: featured snippets, the local pack, and whether AI Overviews cite you. Watch the trend line in one tool rather than comparing absolute numbers across tools.
How to check yours free
- Google Search Console (free, first-party): Performance report — impressions are your raw visibility, average position weights it, CTR shows how much of it converts to clicks.
- Our free SEO audit: scans your site and shows the technical and content issues suppressing your visibility — run it here.
- Rank trackers (Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking) compute a visibility percentage across your tracked keywords and competitors.
The rest of this page covers the levers that actually raise the score — rankings, snippets, local visibility, and AI-answer citations.
Key Metrics for Google Search Visibility
Track these essential metrics to measure your search visibility improvements and identify optimization opportunities
Organic Search Visibility
Measures overall search engine visibility and competitive position
What to watch
Track it by query group rather than sitewide. One weak group drags the average down and hides the groups that are working.
Click-Through Rate (CTR)
Indicates how compelling your search results are to users
What to watch
Compare each page against your own CTR at the same average position. CTR at position eight and position two aren't the same test.
Featured Snippet Rate
Shows optimization for rich results and voice search
What to watch
Count only the queries that actually return a snippet. The rest can't be won no matter how you format the page.
Local Pack Appearance
Critical for local business visibility and foot traffic
What to watch
Check it from the places you serve, not from your desk. Local results shift with the searcher's location, so your office view is the least representative one.
Mobile Search Performance
Essential as mobile search dominates user behavior
What to watch
Google indexes the mobile version first, so start there. Healthy desktop numbers routinely mask a mobile problem.

Three Ways Visibility Usually Breaks
These are illustrative scenarios, not client case studies — the patterns behind most visibility problems, and where the work starts in each one
The local business missing from the map
The site ranks reasonably in ordinary results but never appears in the local pack, where nearby customers actually look
Where to start
Complete the Business Profile properly, then make the name, address, and phone identical everywhere Google checks — inconsistency is what usually keeps a business out
What changes
Google can match the listing to the business with confidence, which is the prerequisite for appearing in local results at all
The site Google struggles to read on mobile
Pages are slow, unstable, or incomplete on phones — which is the version Google indexes
Where to start
Fix the technical foundation first: load performance, layout stability, and making sure the mobile page contains everything the desktop page does
What changes
Google evaluates the full page instead of a degraded version of it, and visitors stop leaving before it renders
The firm whose expertise never gets quoted
The answers are on the page, but they're buried in prose that neither snippets nor AI assistants can extract
Where to start
Structure each answer so it stands alone — a direct response near the heading that asks the question, with the supporting detail after it
What changes
Your pages become quotable, which is what both featured snippets and AI answer engines are looking for
